upgrade to Win 11?

hi, this is just a minor issue.. so basically, one of my pc is being asked by Microsoft almost every update if I want to move over to Windows 11. Currently, the pc is using Windows 10, and it's working just fine. The pc is a 10600k, it's the only pc in the house that's getting asked by Microsoft to update, because the others are too old for Win11. I did a bit of research, and there's no way to stop Microsoft from asking.

so my question is to the people who upgraded to Windows 11. Did you encounter problems with Win 11? Or is it better to stay on Windows 10?

It's better to stay on Windows 10 if you prefer the UX on Windows 10. Windows 11 does away with many QoL features like context menus, and the start menu can take some getting used to. On the other hand, Windows 11 has seen updates to improve performance; most notably, Windows 11 is optimised to properly utilise your E-cores. I've upgraded to 11 from 10 a few years ago, and while I hated the UX initially, I can still do most of my tasks without issue. It helps that I used the registry editor to get my context menus back, and nowadays, I don't really notice as much.

I see, information appreciated. What I was worried about is someone said it takes a lot more clicks to do some things on Windows 11.

guess I'll stay on 10 for now, it's working fine anyway.

They're not wrong. Without some adjustments, Windows 11 is clunkier and less user-friendly compared to Windows 10.

10 is officially supported until 14 October 2025. But I recall staying on 7 well after its support ended. Once 12 or a future one is proper and not extortion, I'll switch.

a little bit late to this, but there are way you can turn off the notifications with the registry or some open source software out there also capable of doing that. Don't upgrade to 11, Bloatware is a worse than 10 is one thing, but the main problem is it so baking in and removing it is much much harder compare to 10

stayed on Windows 7, well beyond it's expiry date as well. What ultimately forced me to switch to 10 are several factors.. malwarebytes and ESET Nod32 could no longer update themselves, and could not install certain games unless Windows 10 is the OS - for example, could not install Dead or Alive VI. With all these factors.. I switched two of the three active pc's at home to Windows 10. The third pc is on dual boot, it could boot with Win 10 or Win 7, the reason for keeping windows 7 is for being able to play old Xbox games like Otomedius - it won't run on Windows 10, need to be on W7 for it to start.

ok, noted. Might try that on the next time I use the 10600k. It's the only one being pestered by microsoft asking if I want Windows 11.
right now, just currently using a 2600k to play gacha games. I know this thing is a dinosaur (lol), but it's fast enough and does not lag in Star Rail and Genshin. And Micrsoft does not ask if I want to put Windows 11 on it.

Technically you can still install W11 on an old CPU, but you should preferably have one that supports the SSE 4.2 instructions set (for PopCnt). The catch? You have to do the upgrade through the media creation tool in the form of a USB stick or ISO. There are tools such as Rufus that even help do away with Microsoft's CPU gatekeeping by editing the official installation image. You will not be able to upgrade through Windows Update (though, at one point, I believe there was a registry hack to bypass that limitation, but I don't know if it's still valid). Microsoft doesn't mind for as long as you're aware of what you're doing - IOW "you're on your own, but kudos if it works".

You have first to ask yourself if there is anything in W11 that you need right now or that warrants a jump from W10. If you're on W7/8 and you're using programs whose latest builds no longer support W7/8, yeah, make the jump to 10 or 11. For now, there is exceedingly little incentive. Better file manager? I guess, but W10's is still good. Copilot and AI tools? Uh...I do use the Copilot in Edge from time to time, but it's certainly not changed my habits nor do I use it as my primary Internet search engine (and sometimes, running a query through those AI engines feels like talking to someone with half his/her brain hemisphere missing). I suppose video game support will probably be the biggest factor nudging users towards W11/12...whenever a growing number of developers will start adding a sticker to their product that says "only on Windows 11/12. Tehepero ;P".

Personally, I'm staying on W10. It will still be working after its official expiry date and it's all I need right now. The day I get a new computer, I will have to sit long and hard on which OS I'll want on it. I do, however, reckon (and hope) that I still have quite some time left before then.

honestly, I'm avoiding Windows 11 like the plague. The reason for creating this thread is because I was getting irritated on Windows asking again and again almost every update if I want to install it on my newest pc.

finding a way to install it on my older pc's is one of the farthest things from my mind right now (lol).

Just for the sake of full disclosure and complete transparency on the matter:

- My CPU is also not on the list of supported processors that make my Windows 10 eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11.
- I have not tried the aforementioned Rufus or thumb drive/ISO upgrade trick; I do however have the software already downloaded and set aside just in case.
- I have no intention to attempt an upgrade anytime soon. There's just no incentive for me.
- For now, it seems the thumb drive/DVD trick is still valid, but I cannot guarantee that, within the coming months, and past W10's expiration date, Microsoft will not start plugging certain loopholes and upgrade bypasses...all to force abstainers to make the switch and drive W11 adoption numbers up.
- If you have an old and unsupported CPU, do make sure it does have SSE 4.2 support - otherwise the upgrade process will succeed but you will not be allowed to boot into Windows 11 (due to PopCnt instructions not being supported).
- If possible, make a backup image of your Windows 7/8/10 partition/disk with a bare-metal disk/partition backup and restore (BMR) software's (like Macrium Reflect, Acronis Home or Acronis True Image, Veeam Agent, AOMEI Backup, DriveImage XML, EaseUS Backup, etc.) bootable media (thumb drive, CD or DVD) before starting the OS upgrade process. That way, should anything go wrong and you can't even boot into W11, you can safely roll back to your original W7/8/10 install.

If you find this too daunting (some individuals unfamiliar with the process might accidentally mess up your Windows HDD/SSD's MBR restore settings), don't understand the process much or don't feel too confident in it...stay safe and abstain.

I've always been a day-1 Windows upgrader since XP SP2 and never had a notable problem (not even with Vista or 8 and 8.1, although Vista came with a new laptop).

It's even better nowadays that the upgrades are free with qualified hardware.

But I also don't use any obscure software on my pc. I use the pc to browse the internet, play video games, watch videos, listen to music, and use several basic office suite software as needed.

I built my first pc last year and wanted legit Windows 11. Now I know it costs like 200 bucks, I think, but I didn`t want to pay that much so I asked a coworker who is IT if he could get me legit Windows 11 for few bucks. He said yes, he knows a guy from whom he buys Windows keys for the company, but I was impatient to get my pc built and start gaming on it so I went and installed my *free* Windows 10...

I still want to upgrade to Windows 11, but reading comments about it and hearing about the new "recall" option makes me not wanna do it...

I am planning on upgrading my cpu and cpu cooler and ssd so I might upgrade then...
