I don't know how Shinkai thinks Suzume is a deviation away from boy meets girl. Him turning into a chair hardly changes that. He says he wants to stop doing that scenario but I'll believe it when I see it.

I sort of expected it, but I went into it with an open mind and, well, that was about on the same level as Weathering with You. A 7/10 at best. I thought the supernatural aspect of the story was handled better, but the romance was piss poor. So kind of the opposite of Weathering with You. It's not like I had a bad time, but it could have been a lot better.
Something I haven't seen anyone talk about are the visuals. The movie looked great as usual, but I was never blown away by any shot like I usually am with Shinkai films. I don't know if it's because it actually looked worse or if it's just an impression I have because a few people/studios have caught up to Shinkai, whereas before he was alone at the top of the world. At any rate, I feel like he's hit a plateau.

Here's my review and discussion of Suzume, plus thoughts where Shinkai could take his works for the future. The film does make a worthy effort of showing Japan beyond just Tokyo, and this is something that I hope Shinkai does more of.
