Well, all things considered, Mirage had intentions to become a singer before she became a pilot. In fact, she was scouted by Delta and joined because she thought she had a chance with the Walkure.

Really? I thought she was interested in Walkure because of wanting to protect them. Wonder if she's envious of Freyja because she's doing what she wanted (become a singer) while she's stuck as a pilot because it's expected of her, that would explain her face during the last episode when Hayate and Freyja speak about doing what makes them happy.

I was certain she was going to become a better pilot, but after Kawamori's statement in the Chinese con he went as guest, I found around in twitter report something very interesting, I'm not sure if I got the gist. Don't quote me on this until I find them again to post it:

Supposedly, according to the con goers, Kawamori stated that Mirage has no talent as a pilot. If that's true, I'm not sure what they'll do with her character. Is she going to become an idol too? Maybe she can replace Kaname?

Not really that surprising. You still see characters like Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne on the list from time to time and Gundam Seed hasn't been new (besides the HD version) in over a decade. With Macross Delta many new and old fans likely went back and watched some of the old series gaining renewed interest in the awesomeness that is Sheryl.

As funny as that comic was, I'd kind of prefer it if Mirage doesn't switch to being an idol, because right now she's the only female pilot in the show. Besides, can you really imagine her trying to act like a cutesy idol?

Same here, but considering how she has been ignored so far by the show she will have to sing and pilot at the same time so we will have the first idol pilot singer.
Her sing will boost her lack of talent. (That if she actually has any singing talent).

Meh, even if he did say that all it really means is that she has to get by on hard work and determination alone, though this also likely means that she will never be as good as a genius who works just as hard; Keith and Hayate's positions as the ace/presumptive future ace are safe. This is a relatively common character setup for anime and manga that feature any kind of conflict, it's just especially disappointing in this case because this is the first time we've ever had a top-billed female pilot in a Macross series- and as Darthtabby mentioned, she's the also the only prominent female pilot in the show. If she were the main protagonist then we would later find out that she actually does have some sort of game-changing hidden talent that nobody knew about, and in Macross that talent would probably be for singing, but as of this moment i am not holding my breath.

He actually never said she had no talent. What he said is that Mirage's mother was a pilot, but her father was a doctor, so she's not a good pilot.

It makes not sense...but whatever.
