Extracting Japanese Subtitles from Raw Videos/DVD's
I was wondering if there is anyway to extract the Japanese subtitles from anime? If not, if I were to purchase a raw anime in dvd format will the japanese subtitles be included and if so, how can I extract them?
I was thinking about purchasing some dvd raw anime directly from JPN amazon in order to view the original Japanese subtitles , but I'm not sure if the subtitles are included with the Raw anime on dvd. |

If an anime DVD has Japanese subtitles (very rare, but it does happen) you can use SubRip to extract them to text. It's OCR, though, so you have to type in every character that appears in the subtitles at least once yourself. If you just want to view the subtitles (not edit them) your favorite media player should display them just fine.
TV broadcast anime may have closed captions (subtitles for the hearing impaired) but getting access to those usually requires finding an unstripped transport stream and that doesn't really happen. tl;dr: don't bother

Pretty much the only anime DVDs/blurays that have Japanese subs are shows that were produced or aired on NHK. As a semi-government agency they're required to put closed captions on their stuff by law.

More and more keep being released with English subtitle formats. Oh, and blu-rays from Japan will play in American blu-ray players.
