I didn't think Reiji could do it, but he managed to talk-no-jutsu Gen into giving up and turning himself in. I'm kinda shocked that it feels like he turned the other cheek. There was this sort-of hope in the tone of his voice that's different from that moment he turned his back on Gen when they were in Tokyo. I think its because for the first time, he has clear goals and is no longer being the 'abyss' that pulls people in; but rather, the ray of light that pulls people out. I guess both Chako and Nagi are next... and possibly, at some point, Yuko too.

Dang, they practically got me with that Yuko bag hallucination .

But yeah, pretty much Reiji remembering some moments with Yuko and him coming to the conclusion that, in the end, he feels absolutely nothing for her. Or so he claims. The man is shedding tears at the very end of the chapter. So I'm not sure if the crying is the personification of the tears of his predecessors, or is that a "him misconstruing his lack of empathy as not-caring, but deep down is crying" type of thing.

With Gen and Yuko out of the picture(at least, temporary for Yuko, if not permenant), I suppose the story can only focus on Nagi and Chako. Maybe Sensei when she returns. I'm curious as to what direction the story will go from here =03.

Yeah, this is it. This makes sense. He tries to share her grief, but no matter what kind of despair she places on him, it doesn't make him feel any more sympathy for her, and I can see that being something he laments about.

As we both already knew, Yuko still alive. I will say that I didn't expect that reaction out of Reiji, though I'm not surprised. I thought he has a rather complex relationship with his mother, I didn't expect him to say 'that' with so much hate. But it is understandable since he both wanted her to be at peace, and to be free from her.

Looks like both Sensei and Chako aren't looking too good. I'm curious where they are going to take Chako in particular as the end is the most sorrowful expression she's had since being told she can't go to Tokyo. Maybe she's come to think that what she sought after in the last couple of arcs she was in wasn't what she really wanted. Sensei is a bit stuck; Reiji more or less rejected her as a woman, so I guess she thought it was the end. I haven't the slightest idea where they are going to take her character from here...

Reiji after finding out his mother is dead: "I'm such a monster for not feeling sad about my mother's death"

Reiji after finding out she actually survived: "why won't she fucking DIE?!"

Gotta say I didn't expect that reaction either, but it's understandable. This chapter is basically about Reiji, Chaka, and Yuri getting pulled back into the abyss after thinking they were finally free.

Chako has definitely hit rock bottom. There's nowhere to go but up for her. She's not my favorite character but I do feel bad.

Someone on a forum mentioned the concept of paradoxical laughter, but I'm not so sure its that, cause that face reminded me of Yuko. I am stumped and not sure if Nagi's about to talk-down-no-jutsu to Sensei, or if Nagi is having some kind of mental breakdown caused by being blamed by Sensei.

Chako has successfully ruined Nagi's life, but that didn't make her any happier. Although it seems what made her angry is that Esemori is dying and already in a coma so he'll get to escape the scandal.

Reiji is completely and utterly alone.

You mean Nagi'll escape the scandal? Well I suppose it'd go both ways, but it feels like she's mad that Nagi will escape the scandal. Sad that she constantly catching these Ls... can't wait to see her back in the main story, as friend or foe.

Reiji being alone, I wonder how he actually feels in the moment. All the things that were in some way shackling him down is gone for the moment. I dunno if this loneliness is any worse than his past self at the beginning of the story.

That being said, what do you think about the snippet of Nagi's past that was brought up? Is she the 2nd coming of Yuko?

No, I mean Esemori is going to escape the scandal, he'll die without even finding out about it. Nagi's life is already ruined.

Reiji is an incest baby between Yuko and her father. That is so messed up. No wonder Yuko seemed to truly believe Esemori was the father, she's probably been in hard denial all these years.

Yeah that was a CRAZY bomb that just dropped. I wouldn't have ever guessed either D0=! But I can't even imagine how that could have happened. Yuko still had to be 30 years old when that incest happened, so I wonder if Yuko was a victim here, being manipulated in some way, even subconsciously(the whole Yuko's grandma brainwash stuff), or was this another one of her "plots". If she really was in denial, then its possible she could have been a victim somehow. Still, its a crazy as f*** though. I wonder what Reiji feels about that?

And yeah, Chako's dad is a POS for sure. All about his rep and seemingly cares nothing for his family, outside stroking his own ego. I agree with Chako's mom; all he had to do is let the girl go to Tokyo like she wanted; her story spiraled out of control when he banned her from going. He initially said it was because it might be dangerous(there was a report someone got attacked or something on campus), but even that might be a lie; that he was worried if something happened to her, everyone in town would know about it. Definitely would see him get some kind of comeuppance.

Reiji deduces his mother told his grandmother a lie in order to isolate him, which is a pretty logical conclusion... but he's clearly in denial. There's no doubt Yuko's been trying to isolate him his whole life, but that doesn't necessarily means she lied.

At any rate, he may have given his grandmother the old pillow treatment.

The ending of the chapter finally brings us to the very beginning of chapter 1. And it really was Chako he's going to agree to commit suicide with after all. So what's going to stop him this time? No way he's going to die without having a talk with Yuko.

When I saw the smile on his face, I had this dread; I knew(or I thought I knew) what was coming. But I'm kinda glad he didn't let what his grandma said slide. She is definitely worse; selling her daughter to pay off debts. Worse, she knew what it felt like, since her mother did the same to her, yet still subjected her daughter to the same predicament. Still, Reiji just straight up lying to make her feel miserable feels like a very dark road he's going to traverse.

Reiji deduced that Yuko has lied to everyone to make Reiji hated, so that he will only rely on Yuko. So the incest might be a lie. Or might not. Hard to say now with just Reiji's deduction. Reiji also thought for sure that Esemori was his father, and the way that information was presented made many readers believe it to be true, only for it to not be. So it is possible he could be wrong here too. Maybe Masaharu actually did impregnated Yuko, but Yuko just lied about Reiji not being his.

As far as Chako goes, I think it'll be interesting to see what Rei has to say about her now. I still remember how important he said she was to him; that she was the only light in his dark life. But now, he may very well say any particular resentments he has about her as he is now.... or maybe she still holds a special place in his heart. Guess we'll see.

IIRC, the theory it was actually a future scene and the girl was Chako came about around the time slim Chako was introduced.

After all the terrible things she's done I doubt Reiji still sees her as his light (that seemed to have switched to Nagi instead), but he should still feel sympathy for her. Or maybe pity. He's kinda gone over the egde...

The one Chako wants to die with is Esemori. I guess that's the reason she was upset when she read about him being on the verge of death. I didn't see that coming though, since she still seemed rather focused on Reiji.

If she doesn't get hospitalized again, she's definitely going to die. She really is nothing but bones now.

Honestly, as a Rei x Chako shipper, I'm glad he finally revealed his true thoughts about her. He has already mentioned how important Chako was during most of his darkest years; that she was the shining light in his life. It's nice to see him affirm this by saying he loves her, despite seemingly being on the Nagi train for so long. Given what he did with his grandma, that totally made me think he could go in the opposite way(with spite and hate) when Chako reappeared, given what she did to Nagi.

Ofc, this doesn't mean he doesn't care or love Nagi too, but I think Nagi represents something much different now than she did at the beginning of the story.

I'm not sure exactly how to decipher Chako wanting to be the "Yuko" in Reiji's life. She's always adored Esemori's books(particularly Spring's Coffin) and mentioned she wanted to be the heroine; a notable nod to the character Esemori was writing about. I can't quite put my finger on it though, but I do feel there is some correlation between her words, and the juxtaposition of these two women in Reiji's life.

As far as Chako dying, I no longer going to believe in these end-of-chapter cliffhangers. Time and time and time again, has this author led the scene in a way to make us believe something has happened, only for it to not go as expected or even completely change direction on that same event. Just a few examples:

1. Chako holding the knife at the end of ch140(imply she might kill/stab Reiji or herself), but ended up with Rei simply tossing it into the river.
2.Gen seemingly looking defeated after Yuko talk-no-jutsus him into despair(ch124), only for it to be Gen attempting murder and trying to kill her offscreen by the time we see him again.
3. Sensei seemingly getting swept up by Yuko and joining her side to bring Reiji home, once she mentions about Nagi(ch119), only for Sensei to call her on her bulls*** in the next chapter.

As much as I enjoy getting swept up in the hype train with everyone else I'll wait until next chapter to see if she's really dead. Currently I'm on the side that thinks she's still alive.

That being said, if she IS dead, then she will forever cement her status as the one Reiji has, and does, love the longest, never being erased to time. I'd kinda like that actually; it would be bittersweet, because despite her recent actions, I've always liked Chako, so it'd be sad if the brightest light in Reiji's life is extinguished =0(....

I thought he was lying in order to provide her with some comfort before putting her out of her misery. The last person he thought of before attempting to burn the house down was Nagi.

He did the same thing with Gen. Waiting for him to get out of prison? That was a complete lie.
