then Nicholi, what do you suggest is the best way to capture the captions of the video? I only used what I thought was usable to get the image. I would like know a solution for capturing videos that do use the H264 codec with soft subtitling since it is difficult for me to capture at the exact frame since you seem quite knowledgeable about it.

Ahh well we finally get down to brass tacks. For anything + softsubs, the best way would would be to just use DirectShowSource in an AviSynth script and capture the frame right out of VirtualDub. Paste to your friend MSPaint, then File->Save As .png. Voila! Nothing out of the ordinary for video editing. Not to mention that makes it exceedingly simple to locate the same frame in both comparisons. Judge by motion in the frame or if its the beginning of a scene, that makes it really simple.
For anything which doesn't require softsubs I would highly recommend using ffdshow's frame Grab feature. It will take the frame directly from the decoder thus no interference from the video renderer, which can be particularly nasty if you use some of the VMR renderers (depending on the settings in your drivers). Plus if you tick HQ RGB (in Output) you'll get a slightly nicer frame grab (this won't effect normal playback though so no worries). |

It has been a long time since i posted at the forum, thx for the support for u|tima Fansub Comparison sites. It has been a busy time for my side here as i preparing for my final year project for my last year of study. After that gotta serve the army for my country for the upcoming year. I used to have the idea of combining u|tima & ultracarl together but thing did not go that well in the past. It will be great if we are able to work out as a community to create a 'mega list' like matt73 have mention in the previous post. It is also great to see eikobean to keep up with the comparison site of his own for this season of anime series great job. Currently my web provider have encounter some issues and i am unsure of able to bring back my old site, but if anyone willing to help out i don mind having my site on their website. But it will be the best if we can able to work out this fansub comparison site as a community.

*sigh* ... just my two cents... (and i'm really lazy to code this myself)
I think someone should create a comparison site using AJAX, where you can interact amongst screenshots images, to compare amongst them via certain parts or via different zoom-levels of the screenshots aka panning/zooming, etc. I'm seeing a lot of problems with tables. Firstly, my monitor is 1280X1024, so it can barely fit one 1280X720 (720p HDTV) screenshot, and it certainly chops off one of the two 704X400 screenshots when comparing them, so practically, it's not even a screenshot comparison at all. :/ |

I was just thinking about something very similar, but not AJAX. Just simple javascript to allow different comparison format.
1) be able to hide any "column" via checkbox at the top of the page. 2) switch different views - side-by-side view and click-to-swap-images view. Those aren't that hard to implement. |

For HDTV res there's http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/, which is pretty nice. I think it scales though, so not so usefull for SD res. And of course you can only compare 2 pictures at once.

I wanted to start a "Bad source" gripe thread, but wasn't sure where to stick it, so I stuck it here.
This post was motivated by my latest aquisition off of SHARE, an "encode" of higurashi no naku koro ni kai episode 16. I use the term "encode" loosely. Im going to have to wait for better sources to become available. Here is what it looks like in gspot: Looks ok...until you notice what I highlighted with the mouse pointer (and also the NTSC fps). Then, I opened it with a viewer and found... ...it was Interlaced NTSC stuffed into into an avi without de-interlacing, decimation, or any other attempts at conversion! Not only was it still interlaced, but it was more blurry than most 125 mb videos of this duration I've seen...yet this source was 245 mb! Anyways, I'll be hanging on SHARE waiting for a better source. Don't want to use this one. I can see why it was the first one available, though, lol. Edit: Just wanted to add: The fact that its Interlaced NTSC I can fix. The fact that it has less detail that a 100mb release should have is not something that no level of sharpening can fix, however. PS: Say, someone should reply to this 'gripe' by submitting some of my own early encoding attempts as an example of a 'bad source', tee hee . Some of my early attempts were not that great, either |

(It would be possible if it was ONLY cropped and not resized but I find that highly unlikely.)

I simply did what I always do in a case like this: I waited until a better source was available . |

I tried the link right after I activated my account and it told me the link was invalid. EDIT: You got the link wrong. It's "f=51", NOT "f=17".

That's the new link (51). They re-organized the forum and as you can see NSW's post is pretty old in order to reflect that...
