Just to ask, other than the true end, how did the other character paths end?

Spoiler for Endings:

Why should they? They ended similar to the anime, just with romance included.

Then what was the trigger for the restart? Happy end, end credits roll and i'm back to the main menu with the game start button?

There are multiple bad endings and one happy ending for each girl. Reaching a bad end does nothing, just gets you back to the main menu. New game or load an earlier save and correct your mistake. A good ending gives you credits and then main menu. You need to start a new game to notice some minor changes. Also, you need to reach each character's good end for Refrain to be unlocked.

On average, how many hours did it take to play through one heroine's route in the VN? How does this compare to the anime's pacing?

Uh, a heroine's route in the anime takes about 1.5 hrs (3 episodes). In the VN it tooks at least around 6-10 hrs.

Each girl's Happy end locks you out of her route, and until you complete everything you can't access it unless you had a prior save.
So the game forces you to complete everything basically.

The definite choice that will lead to the heroine's route will be greyed out, making it unavailable to choose. The two exceptions are Komari's route and Rin's first route which will be both be available to replay without having to complete Refrain first.

Also, I can't really remember well since I played a long time ago, but I believe that Rin's first route will become unavailable to play once Refrain is completed, as the game should redirect you to her second route automatically.

They never specified in the game, other than it made her very socially awkward and shy. I wish they went into detail about it.

Judging by some of her flashbacks, I think she got bullied.

Play the game or watch anime?

I see the anime has bad rating on few websites. But it is hard to believe a key production video game to be bad.

The game is much more detailed the anime glosses over much of the story. It is a good adaption, not fantastic but it is a good job.The anime, however improves on a few points especially near the end.

Some vn players a few years ago said that Rin might've been kidnapped.
Don't know how they came up with that assumption though but the vn does give you various vague hints.

Think of it this way:
Would you prefer reading an expansion of information first, then watch the anime which has many stuff removed, but get to see the characters animated now? or watch the anime first, and read the 'expansion of information' after watching the anime?

I would prefer watching the horrible anime first, then read the visual novel b/c it can continue to give you more info. If you play the visual novel first, you might end up disliking the anime at some point. So I recommend you anime first, then visual novel after. :3

^ The opposite is also possible:
If you watch the anime first, the sense of surprise and tension are effectively dampened since you know what's going on from the get go.

A Visual Novel has a major issue: depending of the reader, if you lose that tension/expectation, it becomes way duller to read. So it is really dependant of how the reader is affected by spoilers in general. If they don't stand them, they better read the VN first then watch the anime.

I personally wouldn't be interested in a VN that I already know what's going on. It also removes all impact from twists that specifically use VN mechanics and flaws for the narration.
