So, uh... Between Koumei and this, where is PA Works heading? Is this their new direction after the failures of Glasslip and so on...?
I am entertained, although it seems like all the cards are on the table by the end of ep 1: we are getting a yakuza war series, except waged by maids. I'm not sure if this will be enough to carry the whole season, but we'll see. Also, like serenade_beta noted, the time setting makes no sense. The first maid cafe in Akiba, Cure Maid Cafe, opened in 2001. Themed moe maid cafes and maids houding passerbys on the streets only became a thing in the late '00s/early '10s. And buhi is such a recognizable piece of '10s slang - why include it? Was kinda looking forward to seeing pre-moeboom Akiba captured on film, so this is disappointing |

Isn't it because setting is focused on Yakuza aspect more then on Maid ones and thus choice of time period? I would be fine if we got eventually Kurosawa styled samurai maids prequel as well. Anyway I don't think this show would even exist if realism was relevant issue here.

Yup, totally accurate portrayal of maid cafe in Akihabara it is.
Still, I agree with feeling weird about detail; civilians and environment looks like 1999 while the maid looks like coming from 2010? Maid isn't exactly booming until late 2000 IIRC, also Cygames and PA Works usually pay attention to this kind of details, so maybe later we will see the deviation point on history that lead to this. Something that made maid cafe populated street by 1999.

Did the crew just sent the first-day newcomers to their deaths?
I'm not sure I even want to give a second ep a chance. The whole plot seems so out of it (not in a good way). I guess I have a week to make up my mind.

And all that for what? Why? It's this nonsensical storytelling that's jarring me.

They are definitely going for goofy and gore. But a bit of internal logic for the setting would be nice.

After watching it again, this is likely the reason behind it.
Also its not like Nagomi will be immediately killed. She only got slapped for being easily intimidated, things only escalated after Ranko killed the girl who slapped her. It fits with how: manager initially didn't want Ranko to go with her until other maids told manager it will lead to better newbie experiences, other maids of opposing faction need time to process what happened implying usually that's not the norm or at least can be settled peacefully with minor injuries (slap).

I'm surprised people are mentioning tarantino. The first thing I thought, watching the first episode, was takeshi kitano. I can only recommend people go and watch some of his his works as a director.
Just watched some of the PR material on twitter (@akbmaidwar) and youtube. Reina Kondo dressed in that maid costume with pig ears doing random things is kind of weird and funny, just litke this show i guess. ep2 preview Spoiler:
