Isn't the easy and obvious answer... the same as 99.9% of other manga adaptions... to push sales of the manga?

This applies only to the first and 2wei! part of the manga. 3rei!! is basically similar as HF route. Although certain portions of comedy and fanservice still remains.

First of all Illya is based on a manga which as a medium is easier to adapt in an anime than a visual novel route. Second Sakura's route is hard to read/watch, the atmosphere is grim, hopeless, and the ending is quite bitter; all of which make it very unpopular. Illya's manga is the polar opposite... light-hearted, self-referential, and filled with positive energy which makes it easy to watch. Consider how studios almost always tone down novel material in fear of losing a major part of the audience (recent examples are Shin Sekai yori, Steins;Gate, Fate/Zero). Illya has the only the danger that it will get banned in some ultra-conservative countries, which are a niche market and almost always ignored when having to make executive decisions.

Now personally, I'd rather watch HF, but realistically speaking if it ever gets adapted it will have to be modified so much, that it won't be interesting anymore (like the PS-all-age-version). Now preferring to watch something, does not mean that I can not enjoy (for different reasons) what they actually do offer, Illya in our case. I definitely don't want Type-Moon to become like Key creating new games/novels every couple of years by changing only the background story and the school uniforms. They do put out new work, and when it's not convenient to animate, there is still a plethora of spin-offs and doujinshi to work with.
Isn't it also because the anime rights to the main Fate/stay Night series is still technically owned by the company (Studio DEEN) that did the original Fate anime and the UBW movie?

In this you are wrong, like many other people. The rights to the original series belong to Type-Moon, Kadokawa Shoten (as publisher) and main producer of the series was Geneon Universal Entertainment. Everything depends only on them. And their mutual agreement. Deen only done their order.

What the hell did I just watch...

This is not, what I had on mind, when I found "Fate".

I was going to give the say that this was an okay first episode but then Ruby... bumped the entire thing up to near epic for me. She was funny as hell and that bath scene was even better than in the manga because of her VA. Maybe I was still fanboying that Ruby and Saphire had Kohaku's and Hisui's VAs respectively, but I enjoyed the heck out of all of Ruby's scenes.

I have a strong Card Captor Sakura vibe when watching episode 1. Not only do their costumes look similar, they both have pink and white color theme. There's also the magical girls' crush on the elder brother figures. When Ruby mentioned collecting cards, I was like "Really? Cards?"

Anyway, Ruby is quite funny. That flexi stick practically carried the entire episode, though people who enjoyed naked loli in the bath would probably disagree.

I'll be completely honest here. I'm not sure what it is that I just watched. Also makes it difficult to put a rating on it.

Is it just me or does this remind anyone of Dog Days? Shirou looks a lot younger than Fate/Stay night, but this is a spin off so it's okay. The whole talking stick thing is kind of weird though

It's the art style they decided to use, like in the manga. It's not the first time a Type-Moon adaption diverges from the original character designs (Rakkyo and Tsukihime anime made the cast look older for example).

Oy, they changed Rin's lines during the reversed master/servant scene, so that it no longer IS a reversed master/servant scene! Why would they do that?!

That was a pretty good adaptation. They got the atmosphere right and the seiyuus did a good job bringing this to life. Still not a big fan of the character design, but it works.

As seen in the OP, Assassin is from Fate/Zero rather than Fate/Stay Night.

Wouldn't that be difficult to say because the True Assassin's look like each other?
