(L) Vinland Saga

Many people were complaining about farmland saga, saying it's boring, etc. but I think that after this chapter they will realize how great author Yukimura is and how great setup he has provided for his characters to strive and shine.

For a second I thought we have another time-skip but fortunately it's nothing of the sort. This new character will bring out what's best about VS and it looks like we will see some great action soon.

Farmland saga will always continue. Even if he is free he will get his pacifistic ass kicked first and humiliated to no end until he explodes or more likely someone else does the fighting while he will be busy protecting the crops! He should shave, grow his hear even longer and start wearing a skirt.

At first I thought the beginning of the chapter was a flashforward depicting an older Thorfinn, then I thought it was a flashback of the elder master... turns out it was actually a new character in the present. He seems like a real badass. Things should finally get moving soon.

We shouldn't forget that this is a historical manga and not neccessarily a battle manga. Altho Thorfinn did grow up as a warrior in battle, the character himself is based loosely on Thorfinn Karlsefni, an early Vinland explorer. The manga will very much likely focus more on Thorfinn's travels and discovery of new lands as it progresses and battle will become more of a secondary part of the plot. The title is Vinland Saga, after all, so we may well see Thorfinn set out to discover this land, and perhaps meet some trouble on the way.

You mean if we are alive by that time. By the speed this manga is going I will be 50 when he sails for the first adventure.

Hmm, I wouldn't have thought so. I doubt it'll be long before Ketil either returns or is discovered to have died. If I may say so, I sense a bit of foreshadowing here with the escaped and vengeful slave. He will probably be taken care of fairly quickly, but it also makes me think if a similar fate isn't in store for Thorfinn and Einar assuming Ketil does turn up dead, and the two won't have to make a run for freedom after all. Ketil's eldest son doesn't seem like the most sympathetic person, he's certainly the type who would abuse his slaves without remorse. Either way, it looks as though they will get their freedom fairly soon, probably around chapter 78 to 80.

This manga just feels slow, because you can't read it trough in right pace. When these series are completed it will be awesome as a whole. Masterpiece material even? Who knows.

Seriously though. You have to understand that now single chapter takes two months, 6 of which takes a year and its still moving at a pace of a turtle like its weekly.

A special chapter 71.5 came out.

Taking place after the fight between the jealous workers and Thorfinn and Einar, the workers want Ketil to punish the slaves but he refuses since he knows they started fight first and there was proof that they sabotage Thorfinn and Einar's fields.

And thus it explains how Thorfinn and Einar got away with punishment.

I really liked this chapter, even tho it was short. Kjetil's a really good and reasonable master, he really treats his slaves well because he knows that if he did otherwise, like most people in his position, the workers on the fields would be disillusioned and the harvests wouldn't be any good. He was very cunning in dealing with the guys who picked a fight with them as well. He ought to be given the banhammer cuz it suits him really well

King Canute has become more badass by training in swordsmanship. Meanwhile, he faces a budget crisis since he needs more funds to maintain his army in England. Rather than raise taxes as suggested by his adviser (Since this only make the people of Denmark angry), he decides he's going to confiscated some rich nobles farmlands. Meanwhile, Ketil has just learn to his dismay that King Haraldn, his backer, is dead. However his elder son tells him that Canute is also here which Ketil sees as an opportunity to gain favor with the new King. Unfortunately right now, he finds out his younger son (the idiot wannabe Viking) is arguing over a merchant not thanks to his idiocy. Ketil is pissed that his son made a fool of himself and tried to blame the whole the thing on the merchant so he compensates the merchant for his son ruining his wares. The merchant quickly accepts only to be told to return the money from the merchant's father who is none other than Leif!

Looks like everyone is getting a reunion.

I had no idea Leif had a son! Either I forgot or this happened after Thorfinn left Iceland to join Askeladd. Either way, it does seem as though there's going to be a kind of reunion. I suspect Kjetil just stabbed himself in the back by making himself known by Canut. He does hold some of the richest farmalnds in Denmark, and Canut will take the fact Kjetil was able to offer him so many gifts as a hint that he's got some serious riches. That said, I've already got an idea whose lands he will try to confiscate, and in doing so will cross Thorfinn's path once more. I wonder what will happen then. Can't wait for the next chapter!

Now that was an interesting chapter. For the first time in a while, it felt like the plot is moving along. Can't for Canute and Thorfinn to meet again.

I wonder what Canute will do with Thorfinn when they meet again? Thorfinn seems to have given up on revenge, if not being a warrior to begin with. Canute, on the other hand, was the one to have sent him into slavery, so Thorfinn is working at the farm entirely thanks to him in a sense. I wonder if Canute will free him and want to use his fighting abilities or simply ignore him? I'm actually more interested in how a meeting between him and Leif will go down. Thorfinn, as I said, changed quite drastically since the last time they met. I wonder if Leif will try to buy Thorfinn's freedom to travel back to Iceland with him. Next chapter will be brilliant!
