Makima is even more terrifying than I thought.

Everything was part of her master plan to destroy Denji's chances at a normal life and void the contract between him and Pochita. Her whole speech in this chapter was one of the best villain speech I've heard, she left Denji completely broken and hopeless.

The twist with the door was great. It turns out it was never about Pochita.

Technically the contract was for Denji to show Pochita his dreams while Pochita becomes his heart.

Having a normal life was what Denji wanted for Pochita. While I'm sure having a normal life is still important, it's technically not involved in the contract.

Denji has been plunged into complete despair, he won't allow himself to "dream" or wish for a better life anymore, so it's all the same in the end.

I have no idea what's going to happen. I don't think Denji can pull himself together on his own, and there's no one left alive to help him do it. Maybe an inner conversation with Pochita?

That depends on what kind of "dream" Pochita wanted to see. Not all dreams are positive. Depending on what he meant, even Denji having recurring nightmares about his past could count as a dream, as long as he is thinking for himself.

Makima is one terrifying antagonist. Her manipulation of Denji was effective and it looks like she really broke him, though I'm sure he'll bounce back.

Yeah, Makima is really rising in my ranks of favorite villains in any series. Terrifying is the word. If this is anything though as close to FLCL which Fujimoto said he is influenced by (along with Abara), really seeing the Makima = Haruko vibes, both being deceptive and manipulative but will be the one to push for Denji’s growth. Let’s see!

I'm not sure what to make of all those devils in Makima's house. Some seem alive, others should be dead but perhaps actually aren't? Maybe she's keeping them on life support somehow so she can use their powers.

All of them did seem to fit. Even if some were a bit bent, like cheru-beam

I was curious to see if the author was making the usual wordplays some japanese authors sometimes use, so i looked up how chainsaw, chainsawman, angel and archangel look like in katakana. (since from the line up of devils in makima's hallway there is supposedly one missing, the one with the archangel title)

アーケーンジェル = archangel (アーケエーンジェル seems to also work)

エーンジェル = angel
チェーンソー = chainsaw

チェンソーマン = chainsawman (as is the title) (マン seems to translate as "man")

there seems to be a partial resemblance in
エーンジ from the angel word
ェーンソ from the chainsaw word
(may be just a coincidence)

The horizontal line is a vowel extender, not an actual sound

in foreign loanwords katakana instead uses a vowel extender mark, called a chōonpu ("long vowel mark"). This is a short line (ー) (wiki)

So, nothing much turned up.


In japanese there seems to be kanji words for angel and archangel anyway, so a comparison with their kata forms may be actually odd.

天 - heaven
使 - messenger
