Anis' grandfather had to deal with a revolution from the nobles, so yeah. It sounds like they could overthrow the Royal family at any time. Those guys are also firm believer in spirits, so they'd have no qualms killing Anis who doesn't have the spirits' blessings.

Her parents don't rule in a vacuum. These old folks have a lot of influence, if they put forward a candidate it will hard even for her parents to refuse, especially since Anis has no magic and is involved with magicology.

Just because commoners like her doesn't mean they're going to go to war for her. Magicology is yet undeveloped, and no matter how strong they are, she, Tilty, Euphie and Lainie are just 4 people.

Even if it does go well, it's still going to be a civil war that will end up killing a lot of people.

I actually do agree that the drama is a bit forced this time. Yes, a monarchy is not exactly a depotism. The monarchial family can't just kill adverse nobles without some major failing on their part, and they must take their reasonable interests into account. But if the scene in the early part of the episode is representative of the power balance between the monarch and his fiefs, it's a wonder they even manages to hold on.

But then, Anis does have to labor under two disadvantages. She's a female in a medieval society, plus she's magicless. Maybe that weakens the royal position enough they are now actually dependent on the mercy of the nobility. Anis was right to try and put Arl onto the seat.

Anyway, seeing Anis have to debase herself to that degree is painful to the heart, and it does make you really hate the nobles, especially the bit about ignoring age. It's not hard to imagine a black hearted old man having ... fantasies on Anis that are best relegated to doujinshi.

I'm a bit conflicted about this episode. The anime staff really tries to implement changes that really make the plot flows better in anime format, but some changes are a bit unfortunate, depending the way how you look at it.

Usual stuff:

Spoiler for Changes and comparisons with the LN:

• Anis' meeting with nobles from a faithful faction is anime original but was basically alluded in the LN.

• Euphie's explanations are pretty much identical. However, Lumi's explanations happened much earlier and are quite different in the anime. In fact, this only happened after Euphie managed to find Anis and they had a discussion with the King and Queen but also with Lumi. I will cover that part later.
  In the LN, Euphie's request and arguments were pretty much the same and Anis rejected her the same way, including Anis being surprised by her own refusal since part of her was willing to take Euphie's hand, just like what implied the anime with Anis' hand motion at first.

• When Anis fled from the palace, the person who found her wasn't Tilty but Tomas, who brought her to his workshop so she could relax a bit. Their discussion is a bit awkward, but after a while, Tomas was fine to listen to her until sunset or if anyone were to come for her.
  The discussion was pretty similar to what was done with Anis and Tilty in the anime: Tomas thought Anis didn't care about the throne, and Anis stated that she has to do that since Algard is no longer crown prince, even though she believed he would be a better king. After Anis ranted about being told she isn't cut for being Queen, Tomas points out that she could simply keep living like she ever did, while supporting Euphie if she has any problem. However, Anis stands her ground, explaining that even though she doesn't want the responsibilities of the throne, she doesn't want to be denied her station as the crown princess. She admits she just want to learn more about magic, but not at the expense of anyone else, otherwise she would have no value as a princess.
  Naturally, Tomas doesn't understand why she is bothered about the notion of being a "princess", since he believe she would still be herself regardless. Anis still thinks she has to carry out her responsibilities but Tomas argues that she has been fine all this time, even some people would love to have her as their queen. Just like the anime, Anis is worried about the nobles but Tomas believes she shouldn't force the matter. If anything, he is worried that she might get crushed by forcing herself due to her own kindness. Right after that, Euphie frantically knocks at Tomas' workshop door, and Tomas allowed her to enter, as he promised Anis to stay until someone were to come for her.

• Anis and Euphie discussion is pretty much identical. Anis was a bit more precise about what she meant by being a princess. She knew no one expected much from her, but she did her best not being in the way so Algard could be the king, but now that he is gone, the responsabilities fall on her. Furthermore, she mentions how the queen cried upon learning that Anis couldn't use magic, and since then, Anis felt like she was a useless daughter. When Euphie argued back about Anis not being fine, she also mention how she protected people happiness with her own magic, such as defeating the dragon or preventing Lainie's powers to be abused by others.
  In the end, Anis was still confused, and both girls went back home before any conclusion was drawn between the two.

• Here comes the other major difference between the LN and anime. Once they are back at the detached palace, Ilia was worried sick and immediately went by Anis' side. Later on, they had a discussion with the King and the Queen. Of course, both were pretty shocked by Anis' raw emotions and were puzzled why she never said anything about that until now. Anis explains that she believed she would be fine, because if she couldn't do it, it would mean she cannot call herself a princess, therefore she cannot be their daughter. Anis insists she will become the queen, but before she could finish her sentence, Sylphine embraced her, arguing she is obviously not fine. She thinks Anis should blame her for failing her children after neglecting them in favour to diplomatic duties. She was perfectly aware of the heavy burden they pushed on her considering her devotion for magicology. But Anis argued that she knew how difficult it was for her parents to maintain peace of the Kingdom. Because of that, she didn't want to get in their way nor fail their expectations, but as their daughter, she wanted to do something. She concluded that if Euphie would make a better queen, then it would mean she is a useless and unneeded princess. Of course, Sylphine dismissed her statement as she never felt her daughter was useless. The King then apologizes as well, for always treating her as an eccentric girl and for not forgiving her for her true desires. As such, he is considering Euphie's proposal, assuming she can make a successful pact with spirits. Of course, Anis protests and was about to suggest she should try a spirit contract as well, but she was immediately denied by Lumi, as Anis is a "traveler" (the same word used by the dragon before cursing Anis). Lumi then explains that travelers are the rarest of humans who don't harbor spirits, whereas the rest of humanity has their soul as an abode to spirits. This is why people have different magical affinities as it depends on what kind of spirits that are dwelling in their soul. Those explanations pretty much confirm that Anis could never ever use magic like other humans around. Following this, Lumi still believes that travelers are amazing since they don't need magic or spirits to survive and that they are capable of advancing the pages of history. Lumi praises Anis' tools, believing that she should be the queen. She goes in details that she firmly believes that spirit convenants should be a thing of the past and that's why she warn people who wish to make a pact with spirits. Upon hearing this and finally realizing the first King wasn't around despite Lumi seemly non aging state, Anis is questioning Lumi's reasons for preventing others from becoming contractors. This is where Lumi explains her past and it deviates greatly from the anime.

• Lumi formally introduce herself as "Lumielle René Palletia". A notable difference here is that Orphans (and possibly Sylphine and Grantz) was not aware that Lumi was part of the royal family, as such, they were surprised she would be against the idea of allowing someone else to make a contract with the spirits. Lumi explains her backstory, what happened to the first king and why she became a contractor as well. While she explains the spirit merges with the contactor soul, thus effectively becoming a spirit as well, they progressively becomes Elemental as their vessel will be discarded. Anis, shocked upon learning this, concluded the kingdom worship was basically manmade and Lumi confirms it was basically reverence to saviors who gave up their human form.
  But the other issue with the contract which was not disclosed in the anime is that, the loss of humanity doesn't simply mean forgeting one's emotions and memories. Instead, contractors are bound by the wish they had when they made the pact. The first king wish was to grant happiness to his people and by making such contract, he created magic in order to help his subjects. However, their prayers for a better life soon turned into greed and selfish desires that he always made sure to respond, practically becoming a wish granting machine. As result, the first king became a conqueror and invaded other countries without questioning the purpose of such desires. Without any other choice, Lumi decided to stop her own father and intentionally erased all knowledge of covenant as she believed people would be fine with magic obtained by the younger ghenerations. Convenants still happened here and there, but they progressively faded away over time.
  Following this, Lumi confronts Euphie, asking if she is trying to repeat the tragedies she had witnessed, but Euphie argues that she has no intention to revive a kingdom, but just wants the convenant to be a legitimate heir to the throne. Her intentions is to put an end to the traditions, claiming the person that will lead them to a new era is actually Anis. Lumi doesn't understand why Euphie must be the one to shoulder that burden to help Anis. Euphie admits it doesn't have to be her, but someone has to do it. In Euphie's perspective, the only way for Anis to change the course of the kingdom is by destroying it and its values, since magic itself has denied Anis which is itself the foundation of the kingdom. In order to prevent any further "betrayal" for Anis regarding magic, Euphie wishes that magic remains a hope that everyone can cherish in their hearts, as such she will spread Anis' dreams. Anis regained her composure and thanks Euphie, but she still believe she is fine, much to Euphie's dismay and anger. And this is where Anis suggests they should settle this with a duel.

In my books, I do believe the anime shouldn't have pushed Tilty here because she not only got more screentime already, but the issue about being a princess/queen or not should be addressed by Tomas who was part of the commoners who appreciated Anis as the "eccentric girl", to put more weight on her identity.
On the flip side, the anime did a better job at giving more reasons for Anis to disagree with Euphie proposal. In the LN, Anis barely mention her worries about Euphie turning immortal, to the point it felt like she was more worried about losing her princess status.

Meanwhile, Lumi's backstory change is a bit mixed. She became a bit easier to sympathize with, since her woes were more focused on the usual immortality issues, it also forgo the actual targedies behind the foundation of the Kingdom of Palletia. That being said, it also indirectly made Euphie's wish "stronger" in the anime because her wellbeing got more emphasis with Anis, whereas it was kind of weird for Euphie to dismiss Lumi's concerns with mere semantics.

Still pretty good adaption nonetheless. That being said, I will agree the drama is still kind of weak and it is mostly due to how the author clumsily tried to create a situation that would force Anis and Euphie to fight each other. That was not exactly the most organic way to do it, and I understand if some people are still puzzled by Anis' fears regarding her princess status, moreso due to what the anime has cut regarding her family.

Based on the anime I thought Lumi was actually the founding "King" of the kingdom. I get what they were trying to do by changing the focus of her backstory in the anime but they ended up omitting major information.

The problem with the anime adaptation is that Anis won't really shut up about spirits and magic in the books and we've gotten almost none of that. Here's how she explained things in the first book:

“Those who enter into spirit covenants with Elementals supposedly possess powers beyond those of ordinary magic. That’s why all countries have taken in such individuals.”

“It is said that the Kingdom of Palettia was founded by nobles with such connections, too. The fact that our nobles can use magic is a remnant of the spirit covenants their ancestors entered into.”

But that had all happened a long time ago, so there was no way to uncover the truth for certain, short of digging up some ancient records. Uncovering long-forgotten history was the dream of some, but my dreams lay elsewhere.

Given the kingdom’s origins, the ability to use magic was incredibly highly valued—which was stifling to someone like me, who couldn’t.

“I’m not sure if it’s the bloodline of the ancients who entered into those covenants or the affinities of their magical energy that they’re attuned to, though. But maybe we’ll leave it at that for now. Shall we get back to the topic at hand?”

“We did get sidetracked, didn’t we? Yes, please continue.”

“I’m the one who went off topic. Well, spirits don’t like my magical energy, and because of that, I can’t call on them.”

“Is that why you developed your magical tools?” Now that we had returned to the main topic, Euphie’s expression reverted to its prior tense state.

I took another sip of the tea before continuing, “I do have magical energy, so I have to find a way to make effective use of it. And I’ve always wanted to use magic. I don’t mind if that means doing it in a nontraditional way.”

As an aside, the reason commoners couldn’t use magic was that they possessed no vestiges of ancient spirit covenants. In the rare event that a commoner was born with the ability, the most likely explanation was simply that they were the illegitimate child of a nobleman.

On top of that, the Kingdom of Palettia had a long history. There were accounts of aristocrats choosing to abandon their noble status—and of others who had eloped to live with commoners. Considering all that, some exceptions were bound to occur.

Those factors could pose a bit of a problem, but that was a matter for another time.

Thank you, Diomedia. We need more true yuri moment like this outside of romantic and rom-com genre/story.

Overall, It's good adaption but it could've been a lot better if it didn't cut out some detail about magic, spirit and politic as it seems to make anime viewers confuse or don't fully understand about some plot point or some characters' motivation.
