Those BETA were advancing at the boundary zone between the East German and West German sectors. So it's no surprise that the West Germans noticed them too.

Considering the general ineffectiveness of mere infantry against BETA and the scale of the operation, which is more designed as a raid, 30.000 men is quite a number.
