It's an theory I have, nothing is really explained about the masks at all.
When ever an Akuruturuka is using the mask,
they say they are opening the gate whenever they use their powers. And Oshutoru also says:
"become an gate and open the road to the source".
Also whenever they use their powers too much, they will fuse(right word? 同化) with the mask and have their souls stolen by it. And the end result looks like this
