If you were hoping to see him as a magical tank, then I'd have to say he isn't. He has the power, but no real affinity for it. That role belongs to Yue. He obtains some innate magical abilities that are very useful though.

Out of those choices, I'd definitely say his will to live played the biggest part. It forces him into a pretty dramatic personality shift.
