Yeah, possibly. Looking at the last scene in the OP (the one with Kirito's sword and Asuna's rapier), it's still hard to say..

I'll admit that I'm no expert when it comes to swords, but must a rapier have protection that extends to the pommel, or is it just a matter of design and preference? Maybe abec thought it was unnecessary. *shrug*
