At university I was doing a presentation on that technique. It uses crystals with meta stable crystal lattices. At the time I was doing the presentation, the meta stability was only possible at extremely low temperatures though, which made the whole technology rather uninteresting for mass production. Actually it was worse in that if the cooling failed those crytals would basically reformat themselves - reorder their crystal lattices (the known materials at that time used a meta stability that was stable when cold and unstable when hot - otherwise it would not be possible to write them with lasers - that can only heat up the lattice not cooling it down - when heating up a spot in the lattice the resulting disorder in the otherwise ordered crystal lattice represents 1 bit of information).
