Godzilla: King of the Monsters (May 2019)

Premise: The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of Huge monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.

We mostly have a brand new cast. Only Ken Watanabe (Dr. Ishiro Serizawa) and Sally Hawkins (Dr. Vivienne Graham) return from the first movie.

Long live the King.

Muck like it’s CGI counterpart, this modern take on Godzilla is colored with environmentalist overtones, portraying the Kaiji as earth’s response to humanity’s destructive tendencies.

I have to say the summary made it more clear to me what this movie is about than the actual trailer :heh:. I really wasn't sure what the role of the people in this movie even were. So the monsters are a planet version of white blood cells out to wipe out humanity because we're a threat? Are all the monsters out to kill everyone or just some of them? Do these people want to find the monsters to unleash them or to stop them from being used to wipe out humanity?

On the positive side...at least the monsters look good from what we can see in the trailer. Hard to say how much presence they'll have since no doubt easier on the budget to focus on the human characters talking about what the monsters are going to do.

Trailer was fine. Now to just wait until next year and see if the movie is good.

Not just "this modern takes", almost all Godzilla movies have environmentalism in them to various degrees. For example, Godzilla vs. Hedorah back in 1971 is way more in-your-face about the environmentalism message than any millennial Godzilla movies so far.

Also, wasn't the original Godzilla film made as an allegory for the nuclear bombings in 45'?

And was kinda expecting them to show Kong, though they're likely saving that for a second trailer.

There will be a Godzilla vs. Kong film in the works to be released on 2020.

Gojira 1954 is actually more about the H-Bomb Testing in Bikini Atoll and the incident involving the crew of a fishing ship called Daigo Fukuryuu Maru (Lucky Dragon number 5, ironic name). The rest of it are callbacks to Hiroshima-Nagasaki incidents and the US aerial attacks toward Japan before the A-Bombs were dropped.

I don't think it's wise to show Kong in this movie outside of a stinger or post/mid-credit sequence. Why? Because they're gonna have a follow-up movie in which the entire premise is having Godzilla & Kong on screen together for the first time in Hollywood (Toho movie not counted).

So was Shin Godzilla about 2011 Touhoku earthquake and satire of Japanese politics unable to stand against foreign government.

Many of Toho Godzilla's movies reflect state of the Japan, maybe that's why they're usually received better there.

As for the trailer, it looks good, but are we actually going to see post-apo world? Or was that just one city.
And I'm glad they haven't shown King Ghidorah in full detail.

It's kinda refreshing watching Japanese react to the American Godzilla trailer. Notice that he said "Radon" when he saw Rodan because that was its original name before the US producers shuffled the vowels to differentiate it from the scientific atomic element of the same name for the US-version.

Also, some theories suggest that there's gonna be two Radons/Rodans in the movie like what happened in the original Radon movie. Also, are they gonna kill Ken Watanabe by making him blowing himself up with the Oxygen Destroyer? I mean, we do see him walking on the ladders of a huge temple/shrine and we see that same temple/shrine being blown up in the trailer. I know Serizawa died by sacrificing himself in the original movie but please don't repeat the same mistake like what they did with Brian Cranston.

I doubt they'd kill off this universe's version of Serizawa seeing as he doesn't have any story going on for him. I see him more as the Titanverse's version of Nick Fury. Also I hope Godzilla isn't made to job to Mothra. Again :uhoh:

Here's an interview with Alan Maxson (the actor of Ghidorah's right head) as he was interviewed by an actual Godzilla-fan youtuber, not mainstream entertainment news reporters. There's some interesting-enough insight in this (and it's only Part 1):

Godzilla seems to have been hitting the treadmill since the first film.

Having seen the second trailer, my impression is very simple: It looks like a much darker version of Final Wars. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing currently

Ithekro 2018-12-18 02:50

Instead of "let them fight" its more "Run! Get out of the war zone!"
